Teams – The Teams ‘classic’ client will be retired after March 31,2024

image  As you are probably aware a new Teams client (aka Teams client 2.0) has been made available earlier in October for both Windows and MacOS devices.

End-users can choose to turn on the new Teams client using the ‘Try the new Teams’ option; or Teams administrators can use a Teams update policy to follow Microsoft, enforce or disable the use of the new Teams client.

Well, you have to be aware that the classic (aka original) Teams client will be retired after March 31, 2024, making the new Teams client the only client available on Windows and MacOS devices.

In addition support for the Teams classic client will end by June 30, 2024.

IMPORTANT automatic update does not apply to Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure – such Azure Virtual Desktop; you can use the MSIX package (available from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/download-app) to deploy the new Teams for these devices.

I would highly recommend to start switching over the new Teams client as soon as possible to ensure your end-users can start familiarizing with the new Teams and also enjoy all the improvements introduced, such as better performance or multi-account/tenant switch experience.

In addition administrators should ensure they are using the Enable automatic installation of Microsoft Teams option in the App portal (https://config.office.com/).
