If you use the Azure portal to access your Azure Recovery Vault backup reports you will start seeing a notification related to the Azure Backup Reporting upgrade which will start using PowerBi for the reports.
To be able to start using PowerBi for your Azure Backup Reporting you need:
- a storage account, used to store the reports
- a PowerBi account, used to connect and create/edit/view the reports
- to have register the Microsoft.Insight resource provider
Register the resource provider
To register the Microsoft.Insight provider, connect to your Azure portal (https://portal.azure.com/) and reach out the Subscriptions configuration blade
Then for access each subscription you need to enable the provider and access the Resource Providers blade from the Settings section
Search for Microsoft.Insight and register it if not
It can take sometime to get it completed and registered.
Configure the storage account
IMPORTANT the storage account you are planning to use must be created upfront
NOTE you will need the access keys for later
Then lookup for Recovery vault
Then reach out the Backup Reports blade
Click on Link to Diagnostic Settings and turn on diagnostics
Name the setting and select Archive to a storage account – you can also send the log to the Azure Log Analytics but this will not use PowerBi – and configure the storage account settings
You must at lest select AzureBackupReport
Once completed you should then see the diagnostic/report settings and the storage account you configured
Use PowerBi to view the report
Connect to PowerBi (https://powerbi.microsoft.com) and go to the Apps section and click on Get more apps from Microsoft AppSource
Then search for Azure Backup and then get it
Define the storage you have set when configuring the diagnostic settings then select the authentication method to Key and set the access key for the storage account
After few minute you will get the Azure Backup app available
Then you can use it and access the Azure Backup Dashboard
