When you deploy a new virtual machine, you can define the virtual disks size.
From time to time, your initial disk sizing may be too short and you need to increase the disk size to provide more storage space.
Until now, before being able to resize the disk you had to shutdown the virtual machine.
Well, good news, as you can now resize your virtual data disk without virtual machine downtime.
Before you start jumping on it, you know the following limitations:
- Applies only to data disk; you can now resize OS disk without downtime
- Not supported for shared disk – you still need to shutdown the virtual machine before resizing shared disk
- Ultra disk and Premium SSD v2 disk live resize is in preview
- Supported region
- Australia East
- Brazil South
- Canada Central
- Central India
- Central US
- East US 2
- France Central
- Japan East
- Korea Central
- North Europe
- Southeast Asia
- You still need to expand the size of the disk from the operating system, otherwise the expanded size will only be ‘blank’ space and not usable
