Azure Storage account allows you to store data objects (blobs, files, queues, tables or disks) in the cloud.
When you create a storage account you have to select a redundancy option – from locally redundant (LRS) to Geo-zone redundant (GZRS), and anything in between.
If you selected a non-zonal (LRS or GRS) redundancy option, it was not possible for you to change it, unless you delete the storage account and recreate it, or by opening a support request.
Well, good news as you can now convert a non-zonal redundant storage account to a zonal redundant by yourself (Customer-initiated conversion), directly from the Azure portal.
To take advantage of this preview, you need to opt-in for it.
NOTE the preview is available in all public ZRS region with the exception of West Europe, UK South, Canada Central, East US and East US 2
( you can find the Azure regions with availability here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/availability-zones/az-overview#azure-regions-with-availability-zones).
To do so, from the Azure portal (https://portal.azure.com/) access the subscription you want to opt-in for the preview and access the Preview features to search for Customer-initiated as the name of the preview
Once the preview has been successfully registered, access the Storage accounts management blade to select your non-zonal account
Once you have selected the non-zonal storage account, access the Redundancy blade under the Data management section to select the Zone-redundant storage; once the conversion is completed you will then be to change the zone redundant option
Once the conversion is initiated it can take up to 72 hours to begin.
