With SharePoint 2010, Microsoft has taken into account the importance of social networking.

Anyway, social networking was already included in MOSS but not really used – and I would say not really useful as it was located on My Profile but not accessible through SharePoint sites.

Now, there is a better way. On each SharePoint site, there is Tag button available to allow end user to tag a page. These tags will be included in your profile and will offer a better way to find something or someone.

These tags will be also used by the Tag Cloud, a missing functionality in MOSS.

When you click on one of these tags, you will be redirected to the web application which is hosting My Site/My Profile.

If you click on the Add to “Ask me about” in My Profile, you will automatically add it as a ‘competency’; this exactly what was missing with the social networking in MOSS.

Using this Ask me about is very helpful to find someone which has the searched competency
