Office 365 – Legacy OneDrive for Business client is being retired

Following the announcement during the last Ignite Conference, the legacy OneDrive for Business client is going to be retired.

This means starting October for the monthly channel customer and up to April 2018 for the semi annual channel customers, the legacy OneDrive for Business client (so called groove.exe) will not be installed anymore with the Office 365 Pro Plus click to run.

Then, and if not in use and not synching library from SharePoint Online or SharePoint On Premises or if the PreventUninstall registry is not present, the legacy client will be uninstalled.

If you are already using the next gen OneDrive for Business client (so called onedrive.exe) you are not affected by this.

The legacy client (groove.exe) is still supported and used for SharePoint On Premises synchronization.

If you need to keep the legacy client in place, you can create the following registry key:

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Groove] "PreventUninstall"=dword:00000001

If you are using a configuration file to deploy Office Click to Run, ensure you add the following key to not install anymore the Groove client

<Product ID="O365ProPlusRetail" >

<Language ID="en-us" />

<ExcludeApp ID="Groove" />

</Product>
